SHB 1240 - BAD Bill

Bill Title: Establishing firearms-related safety measures to increase public safety

Committee: Law and Justice SENATE
Companion Bill: none

Bill Summary:

  • AN ACT Relating to establishing firearms-related safety measures to increase public safety by prohibiting the manufacture, importation, distribution, selling, and offering for sale of assault weapons, and by providing limited exemptions applicable to licensed firearm manufacturers and dealers for purposes of sale to armed forces branches and law enforcement agencies and for purposes of sale or transfer outside the state, and to inheritors; reenacting and amending RCW 9.41.010; adding new sections to chapter 9.41 RCW; creating a new section; prescribing penalties; and declaring an emergency.

What the Bill says:

  • This lists firearms which would make them illegal even though they are legal to own in this country as they cannot be retrofitted to comply with Washington Law if this passes. It says you cannot transfer your weapon to another person except upon your death if you currently own such a weapon as is listed here. It defines semi-automatic as a weapon which discharges the casing from the chamber and loads another bullet AND requires to to pull the trigger again to shoot again. It allows firearm dealers to purchase/sell/transfer their weapons which would be illegal for Washington citizens to buy to anyone who does not reside in this state!

Our Summary Opinion:

  • This bill seriously limits the rights of Washington citizens to purchase almost all firearms.
