Bill Title: Classifying unlawful possession of a firearm as a violent offense.
Committee: Law & Justice
Companion Bill:
Bill Summary:
AN ACT Relating to classifying unlawful possession of a firearm as a violent offense; amending RCW 9.94A.030 and 9.94A.030; providing an effective date; and providing an expiration date.
What the Bill says:
The bill states that Individuals in possession of firearms that do not have the right to bear arms are committing a violent crime in the first or second degree depending on the prior crimes which created the status they are under of being prohibited.
Our Summary Opinion:
It is the opinion of OlympiaWatch team that there are some crimes which should preclude a person from exercising the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. IF this state passes a reasonable RCW allowing for the restoration of that right for some felons then it is responsible law to include the statute that makes it a violent crime for these felons to break the law and be in possession of firearms.
Status: The Senate bill is scheduled for public hearing in the Law & Justice Committee on January 28th at 8 am and an executive session on January 30th at 10:30 am.
