Bill Title: Concerning the disposition of privately owned firearms in the custody of state or local government entities or law enforcement agencies.
Committee: Civil Rights and Judiciary
Companion Bill: SB 6001
Bill Summary:
AN ACT Relating to the disposition of privately owned firearms in the custody of state or local government entities or law enforcement agencies; and amending RCW 9.41.098.
What the Bill says:
It will require most weapons to be destroyed if they are in police custody. Exceptions are made for antiques which they will auction, for 10% of weapons confiscated for police inventory and use, as well as any weapons being reported stolen be returned to rightful owner.
Our Summary Opinion:
It is putting recovered stolen weapons at risk of being destroyed if the rightful owner doesn’t have a serial number by which to identify their weapon. It also sets up a system for a police conducted buy-back program for the destruction of guns.
Status: The house bill had a hearing on January 16th and executive session is scheduled for the 19th.
