- AN ACT Relating to supporting civic engagement for incarcerated and institutionalized individuals in state custody to promote inclusion and rehabilitation; adding a new chapter to Title 72 RCW; and creating a new section.
What the Bill says:
- This bill completely changes the law and mandates that inmates and institutionalized persons (mentally ill) be afforded the right to vote.
Our Summary Opinion:
- It seems utterly crazy to consider letting criminals vote to promote their best interest for release or reduced sentences for the crimes they have committed. It is even more insane to consider letting an institutionalized mentally ill person vote. Currently our laws do not allow either of these to occur. This is the second bill with similar language this session. Please recommend a NO vote!
Status: This bill had a hearing on January 15th State Government & Tribal Relations. Has been scheduled for executive session at 8 am on January 31st.
