- AN ACT Relating to improving access and removing barriers to voting in jails and state hospitals; adding a new section to chapter 29A.04 RCW; adding a new chapter to Title 29A RCW; creating a new section; and prescribing penalties.
What the Bill says:
- This bill completely changes the law and mandates that inmates and institutionalized persons (mentally ill) be afforded the right to vote.
Our Summary Opinion:
- It seems utterly crazy to consider letting criminals vote to promote their best interest for release or reduced sentences for the crimes they have committed. It is even more insane to consider letting an institutionalized mentally ill person vote. Currently our laws do not allow either of these to occur. The Secretary of State requested this bill and that makes us really wonder what he is thinking. This is the second really bad voting bill he requested this session. Please recommend a NO vote!
Status: This bill had a hearing on January 15th State Government & Tribal Relations. No further action has been taken so far.
