HB1174 - BAD Bill

Bill Title: Improving access and removing barriers to jail based voting

Committee: Appropriations
Companion Bill: none

Bill Summary:

  • AN ACT Relating to improving access and removing barriers to  jail-based voting; adding a new section to chapter 29A.04 RCW; adding a new chapter to Title 29A RCW; and creating a new section.

What the Bill says:

  • The auditor and the County or City Jail must coordinate to ensure that the incarcerated people have access to vote.

Our Summary Opinion:

  • The state law has never allowed an incarcerated person to vote. They could overturn our elections while we are trying to keep our state safe from their behavior. We should not start allowing them a freedom we still have because we did not break the laws while they committed crimes which forfeited their freedom to vote.
